Question 1: What are the primary principles of design?
Answer: Unity, Variety, Hierarchy, Dominance, Proportion & Balance.
Question 2: Find 5 logo's and describe them with reference to the primary principles.
LOGO 1: Cadbury Chocolate.
Description: The Cadbury logo's unity would be the colours. I think the only variety which it contains is also the colours, being purple and white. I believe the logo lacks dominance on it's product as it blends in with the products packaging. Hierarchy generally doesn't apply as your eye automatically goes to the entire logo. The dominant feature is the font. It's proportion and balance is good.
LOGO 2: Woolworths
Description: The Woolworths logo contains unity because of the fonts which are used, they are simple and clean. The variety is the different colours which are used for the logo. Hierarchy with this logo would be the image and then the red text and finally the text bellow that. I think the dominance is the red "Woolworths" as it attracts the eye because of it's colour. It has good proportion and balance.
LOGO 3: Petbarn
Description: The unity of the image is it's colours. The variety is the images used (dog, cat, fish and bird). The hierarchy i think goes from the from the large font, the images and then smaller font. The dominant feature is the large black Petbarn. The proportion is good however, the balance may be a little out put weighing more to the right of the image because of the bottom wording not being center
LOGO 4: Gloria Jean's Coffees
Description: The unity of the logo is it's colours. The variety is the combination of an image and text. The hierarchy is from the top of the logo to the bottom. It's dominance would be the image. I think it's well proportioned. It may balance heavier on the top than the bottom, however i still think that it works well.
LOGO 5: Betts Shoes
Description: The unity of the image is it's colours. There is no real variety unless you count the colours - brown and white differing. It does not really contain hierarchy. The entire logo is the dominance. It's proportion and balance is really good.
Question 3: What is the difference between symmetric and asymmetric balance?
Answer: Symmetric balance is where elements are arranged the same or very similarly on either side of the central axis. Whereas, Asymmetrical balance is the art of creating balance using uneven numbers, sizes, or kinds of elements.
